News JULY 2007 UPDATE 5th July 2007 Hello
one and all, it has been some time. I must apologise for not having updated the
site in so long, but I've finally got round to making some changes.
LIST OF PAST PEARLIES 24th April 2006 There is now a list of past Pearlies available for download on the site. Many visitors to pearlysociety.co.uk have enquired about relatives that were once Pearlies, and we hope that the list will provide a little more information to those who require it: LIST OF ALL KNOWN PEARLIES AND TITLES
CHANGE IN DATE 24th April 2006 The May Fair at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden will be held on the 14th May at 12pm, not on the 7th, as previously advertised on the 'events' page. Sorry for any inconvenience.
EVENT CANCELLED 24th February 2006 The Cockney Night at Blackheath Halls on the 25th February has been cancelled. The event organisers are planning to reschedule this event for later in the year. We will let you know about it as soon as we know all the details.
UPDATES!! 29th January 2006 Hello and happy new year! This is the first update in quite some time, so there's a lot to tell you about. If you pop into the 'Events' section of the site, you will see the brand new calendar of events for 2006. This includes our next event at Hackney Empire on the 1st February, which is the Old Time Music Hall day. For more information on this event contact Carole on lpkqs@yahoo.co.uk or get hold of Hackney Empire direct on 0208 510 4500. Next up is the Cockney Night at Blackheath Halls on 25th February and then Chrisp Street Market on the 25th March. More dates will be added to the Events Diary as the year goes on. On 1st January members of the Society attended the New Years Day Parade. Classic Cars supplied the vehicle which took the Society around the route. The Mayor of Westminster presented the Society with a plaque and a framed poster to say thank you for our contribution to the event. Arthur Rackley, Pearly King of Upminster, was made honorary guest for the day. On 22nd January we attended the Taxi Drivers Childrens Party at Grosvenor Hotel at Park Lane. The event is able to be held every year using money raised by the taxi drivers, giving handicapped and under-privileged children the time of their lives. Stars that attended the event included the Cheeky Girls and stars from Eastenders and The Bill. On Sundays at 9pm on BBC3, you can catch Carole and Pat Jolly, Pearly King and Queen of Crystal Palace in Wedding Stories. You can hear their views on why marriage either lasts, or it doesn't. Expect more updates on the site in the near future, but for now hop on over to the 'Photos' page, where we have quite a lot of new pictures up for you to see. Keep checking for new updates in 2006!
Lecture: The Pearlies of London 22nd September 2005 On
the 2nd October 2005, at 5pm, at the Ragged
Correction 2nd September 2005 The Pearly Guild Harvest Festival, which will be attended by members of the Society, will be held on the 25th September, not on the 2nd October as previously stated on the website. The procession will start at 1pm at Guildhall, and end at St. Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside, where the church service will take place. The Society's own Harvest Festival will take place on October 9th, at 11am.
News from St. Paul's Church 22nd July 2005 As we reported in our last update, the Rev Mark Oakley has left St. Paul's to take up a new post as the Archdeacon of Germany and Northern Europe. Here is a photo of Mark with the Society on the day of his last service at St. Paul's. Again we thank Mark for all he has done during his time at St. Paul's.
Recently St. Paul's held its annual Summer Fayre, attended by members of the Society, and many faces from the world of showbiz. Among those present were Donald Sinden, Graham Cole (Tony Stamp, "The Bill"), and the cast of "Last of the Summer Wine". To see photos from the event, go to the photos page and head towards the bottom. There has also been a small update to the photos page, under the heading 'July 2005 update'.
News Update: March 2005 27th March 2005 Well, it's been a while, but at last, here is the first update of 2005! We've managed to get through technical difficulties of all kinds and finally we are able to bring you the latest news from the Society, and a fully updated 'Events' page. While the Society are out and about collecting for charity they bump into people from all over the place. There is an enormous amount of interest in the tradition of the Pearly Kings and Queens, particularly from foreign visitors to the UK. So we are very pleased to add to our website both French and German versions of the 'Pearly Story', just to make a few people's lives a bit easier! French Version / German Version Some news from St. Paul's now. On the 22nd May 2005, the Rev Mark Oakley will take his last service at St. Paul's before leaving to take up the position of Archdeacon of Germany and Northern Europe. All Pearlies are expected to attend the service. Mark will become the resident priest at St. Alban's Church in Copenhagen, Denmark, and will become the Archdeacon responsible for churches in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Germany. He will be settled in St. Albans by 25th June. We wish Mark all the very best in his new post, and thank him for all he has done in his time at St. Paul's. St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden : www.actorschurch.org Lastly, we would like to welcome John Walters into The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society, who has joined us as a Pearly Pride. The next update should not be too far away, as there are a fair few photos that need to be added to the site, so keep checking back! Happy Easter everyone!
Harvest Festival and Updates 2nd October 2004 The Society are currently preparing for the annual Harvest Festival to be held at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden on the 10th October. Everyone is welcome to attend the service and take part in the celebrations. Last Sunday the Society attended the Pearly Guild Harvest Festival at St. Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside, and also took part in the procession that went from the Guildhall to the church. The Society are pleased that members of the Guild will also attend the service at St. Paul's on the 10th. Photos from recent events at the Ace Cafe and on ITV's Boot Sale Challenge are now up in the Photos section, so please feel free to browse. Webmaster
Update 15th July 2004 Apologies once again for the lack of recent updates, hopefully from now on it should be full steam ahead as we move into our second year on the World Wide Web. As I write members of the Society are attending The Great Children's Party in Battersea Park. Hopefully we should get some photos from today up on the website within the next few weeks. We love to hear from anyone with an interesting story to tell, so why not leave a post on our message board? Have you seen a Pearly lately? Tell us about it! Just go to the 'Contact' section of the site and take your pick of our Message Board, Guestbook, or our Communigate Guestbook.
Latest and Forthcoming Events 26th April 2004 On
the 9th May 2004, members of The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society will
attend the 29th
Annual Covent Garden May Fayre And Puppet Festival.
Open:
1030 -1730 Next weekend, four members of the Society will be filming for an episode of ITV's Boot Sale Challenge. As yet we are not sure as to when the episode will be shown, but as soon as we do we will post it on the website. Recently members of the Society also attended a St. George's Day event at West Ham United Football Club. Guests included ex-professional boxers and a charity auction was held. A good time was had by all.
Happy New Year! 26th January 2004 We are now back on-line after the Christmas break! We hope that all our visitors had good Christmases and hope everyone had happy New Years. Already this year we have taken part in the New Year's Day Parade - being one of the few organisations to be leading the parade through London Town. Do stay tuned as there are photos of the day that have yet to be put up on the site, they should appear soon. We will be updating our calendar for the coming year shortly, but until then, you can catch us at the Jubilee Market, Covent Garden on the third weekend of every month. Happy 2004!
New Year's Day Parade and Carol Services 17th December 2003 Last night members of The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society attended the community carol service at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden. It was an enjoyable evening for all and next week Society members will be again attending St. Paul's for another service. This coming weekend will be the last collecting date before Christmas. You will be able to find Society members collecting outside Jubilee Market, Covent Garden from about 10am through until 3pm on Saturday and Sunday (20th and 21st December). On 1st January 2004 London will hold its 18th annual New Year's Day Parade. At 12 noon the parade will start in Parliament Square, and it will end in Berkeley Square approximately three hours later. The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society are very pleased to be involved in this event as part of over 10,000 performers taking part. It is advisable to get there early as over a million people are expected to attend! To read more about this event, visit the official New Year's Day Parade website at: http://www.londonparade.co.uk Click here for The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society at www.londonparade.co.uk As it's unlikely that there will be any updates between now and the beginning of 2004, we would like to wish you a very Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year. See you in 2004!
The Illustrated London News 26th November 2003 If you would like to find out more about the Society, and about how the London Pearly Kings and Queens operate today, why not pick up the latest issue of The Illustrated London News? The magazine, released only twice a year, is very entertaining in its own right. However this month there is a very informative article on the Pearlies, "Divided at the Seams", that focuses on the three Pearly charities, the Guild, the Association, and of course the Society. It features a full page photo of Society chairman Pat Jolly and his wife Carole (Pearly King and Queen of Crystal Palace), as well as the story of how the Society was set up. So go on, buy your copy now! Webmaster
Latest Pearly Society Events 16th November 2003 I am glad to inform you that the most recent Society events have been a success. On Saturday the 8th November we took part in the Lord Mayor's Parade, joining up with the nurses of St. Bart's in the procession. The next day we attended the Remembrance Day service held at the Society's church, St. Paul's in Covent Garden. We were also very pleased to be able to greet the Hong Kong president in Covent Garden last Tuesday as part of his trip to the capital. The Poppy Appeal collections at Jubilee Market in recent weeks were also a great success.
*New* Harvest Festival 22nd October 2003 The Harvest Festival held on the 12th October went very well indeed, and we have now updated the 'Harvest' page with a few pictures and a report. Elsewhere on the site we have added new events for now until the end of the year, and no doubt in the coming weeks, with the busy schedule ahead, there will be even more to put up, so do keep coming back!
Updates! Harvest Festival Page! 4th October 2003 The Harvest Festival page is now up and contains information for Sunday's service at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden. Anyone can turn up to attend the service and meet Society members. After Sunday we will post photos and a report on the page. Do remember to check back! With the Harvest Festival next week we have also added a page on the site for St. Paul's, giving a short history of the church and other information. There is a new form on the 'Donations' page to make donating money to the Society a lot easier. See you at the service!
Back again! 21st September 2003 I'm sorry about the lack of updates in the last couple of weeks, but I've had a fairly busy time moving house. But now I've got everything sorted out there should be news of the forthcoming Harvest Festival appearing here shortly. Also, I am pleased to announce that I am passing over the the duty of updating the site to Carole Jolly, Pearly Queen of Crystal Palace, so now all the news and information will be passed to you straight from the Society, as opposed to making a 400 mile round trip before making it on to your screens like it has of late! Any questions about the site or link submissions (we are always pleased to include links and banners from those who reciprocate) can still be e-mailed to me at: webmaster@pearlysociety.co.uk Keep checking back for news on the Harvest Festival! Webmaster
Hop farm and Updates 10th September 2003 I've heard that the Cob Tree Farm Hop Picking Weekend went well, hopefully by next week there might be some sort of a report on the event (and maybe a photo or two). If not, the next Pearly Society event will be the annual Harvest Festival held at St.Paul's Church, Covent Garden on October 12th. This is one of the highlights in the Society's calendar, so check back to see what happened there.
Message Board! 2nd September 2003 As if having a guestbook wasn't enough, we now also have a message board! If you just hop along to the 'Contact' section of the site, you should find it somewhere near the bottom of the page. So far no one has been brave enough to sign the guestbook, but if you have just stumbled across our site while trawling the web, and if you have found it informative, we would really like to know what you think. Any responses would be most appreciated.
Guestbook! 26th August 2003 Yes, it's up! If you wish to leave a message in the guestbook just click the 'Contact' button on the left, where it will appear down the bottom of the page somewhere. We look forward to hearing from you!
Almost forgot.... 25th August 2003 ....the 'Donations' page! It's been up and running for just over a week now but I forgot to say anything about it in the last update. Yes we have a 'Donations' page on the site now providing information for anybody who wishes to help the cause of The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society. Any contributions will be gratefully received by the Society. Something else I totally forgot about was my promise last week to update the 'Events' section. Hopefully in the next day or two this should be sorted out and there will be some other bits added to the site. The family tree of The Pearly King of Upminster will be arriving on these pages shortly, and there should be some more family histories on their way here too. Watch this space!
Back! And more Updates! 17th August 2003 Back from holiday and of course, that means more updates! This week I'm sticking some new pictures up in the 'Photos' section, and in the 'Info' section, we now have some Family Histories available so you can find out more about the Pearly Kings and Queens of Crystal Palace and Harrow, and coming soon, the Pearly King of Upminster. With any luck there should be some further updates this week, mainly in the 'Events' section. Keep checking back!
No Updates for a Fortnight! 1st August 2003 There will be no updates on Pearly Society.co.uk in the next 2 weeks because I'm going on holiday! This means that any mail regarding the website or proposed links to the site (webmaster@pearlysociety.co.uk) will not be answered during that time (sorry!). However, if you send general Pearly related e-mails to lpkqs@yahoo.co.uk then hopefully Carole will see them and get back to you. Unfortunately I haven't managed to get the message board or guestbook up and running in time before I go away, but if you would like to leave any comments, suggestions or questions, please do so on either the message board or guestbook at our Communigate site: www.communigate.co.uk/london/pearlysociety/index.phtml No doubt there will be more stuff to put on the site when I get back, so keep checking back, and I'll see you in a fortnight. Byee!
Next Pearly Society event! 27th July 2003 Members of The London Pearly Kings and Queens Society will be attending The Faversham Hop Festival on the 30th and 31st August. For information on taking a Steam Train from London to Faversham on that weekend, take a look at this leaflet (front/back) or visit www.shepherdneame.co.uk. Available on this weekend are:
Updates: Photos, Info and Events! 27th July 2003 Today the Photos, Info and Events sections of the sites have been updated! There are three new photos on the site (more on the way!), and a list of the annual events that the Society have attended or are due to attend is also up in the Events section. Also, in the Info section of the website, there is now a list of Society members and their titles. We are always adding new links to the site, so hop along to the Links page to go to other sites with connections to charities, tourist pages, Government pages, and some of the best London-related sites on the web - such as www.offtolondon.com, everything you need to know for your visit to the capital.
Updates on the way! 24th July 2003 Keep an eye on www.pearlysociety.co.uk as there's going to be lots of new additions to the site over the next week or so. Hopefully the 'Events' and 'Info' pages will have lots more added to it and no doubt there will be other interesting stuff there too. Come back soon!
Pearly Kings and Queens Society Website launched! 9th July 2003 The website was first posted on the net on the 9th July 2003. Over the coming months the site will be under major construction and bits and pieces will be added all the time - so make sure you come back and visit! Any news concerning the Society will be posted in this section of the site. Also, we have just set up a mini-site on Communigate London website. The address is: www.communigate.co.uk/london/pearlysociety/index.phtml The mini-site has a notice board and a message board, so anyone involved in Communigate can post on it. Go on, post something! Communigate is a fantastic service for Londoner's on-line, offering local communities and groups the chance to be heard. Well worth a visit. And don't forget to sign our guestbook! We want to hear from you!
